'O tenente mm'ha 'ncucciato

Ll'aggio ditto accussí: "Signor tenente,
mannáteme 'mprigione, nun fa niente!
Penzo a 'o paese mio ca sta luntano,
e só' Napulitano, e si nun canto, i' moro!"

'O tenente ha suspirato:
"Napule è bella assaje, Napule è bella!
Napulitá', pur' io só' 'nnammurato,
cántala zittu, zittu 'a canzuncella."

Ll'aggiu ditto accussí: "Signor tenente,
cantáte pure vuje, ca nun fa niente!
Penzo a 'o paese mio ca sta luntano,
e só' Napulitano, e si nun canto, i' moro!"

Trase e luce, 'a luna d'oro,
pe' fá lucente e d'oro 'a cammarata.
Tutt' 'e cumpagne mieje, dint' 'a nuttata,

E i' ca dico accussí: "Signor tenente,

Chillo, 'o paese nuosto, sta luntano,
e chi è Napulitano, o canta, o sonna, o more!"

Translation

The lieutenant has greeted me
With tears in my eyes and the guitar in hand
And said to me: "Neapolitan,
Here you're not tenor, you must be a soldier!"

I've told him this way: "Sir lieutenant,
Send me into a prison, it changes nothing!
I think of my land that is so far away
And I'm the neapolitan, and if I don't sing I die!"

The lieutenant has sighed:
"Naples is so nice! Naples is beautiful!
Neapolitan, I'm also in love with it,
Sing your song but quietly!"

I've told him this way: "Sir lieutenant,
Sing you also, 'cause it changes nothing!
I think of my land that is so far away
And I'm the neapolitan, nd if I don't sing I die!"

The golden moon rises and shines
To illuminate the casern.
All my comrades at the night
Cry together with me and sing chorus.

And I tell this way: "Sir lieutenant,
Do we go into a prison? It changes nothing!
Our land is so far away,
And who is a neapolitan either sings or dreams or dies!"
